After winning 2 consecutive Championships in Rotax 177 Karting. Jon decided to make the move to Cars. Purchasing the ex Barry Rabbit Fiat Punto Abarth Irish Cup Car late 2012 as a project to return to its former glory, Jon decided to enter the car in the MSV Track Day Trophy series and to cut his teeth and learn the circuits. Securing a large amount of support from Hydraquip and further sponsorship from other local businesses the car looked the part. Overall the performance and complete package of the car was outstanding for it’s age, but the racing not as close as hoped due to the class structure in MSVTT. Another single make championship was needed.
Jon found the Alfa Romeo Championship which invited the Irish Abarth’s to race in their invitation class. A lot was learned racing against the very quick Irish guys who made the special trip over to race on uk circuits with the Alfa’s. However, not scoring points or having the potential to win the championship due to being in a invitation class meant looking at changing cars. Class E had the biggest grids in the championship and looked the best value and fun for the money with the 147’s and 156 production cars.
With the cars being closely matched, control road tires and fast road suspension costs are kept low leaving driver talent to shine through. The car runs a standard 2.0 16v Twinspark engine @ 170bhp has a good chassis and puts in respectable lap times. Learn more about the car here
Jon is looking forward to the 2014 Alfa Romeo Championship which is already shaping up to have a large grid of class E cars with many new drivers in the running also.
